NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope spotted 36 dwarf galaxies orbiting the nearby Andromeda galaxy, which was previously assumed to contain fewer than 25 million light years of satellites. These dwarf galaxies are unlike their counterparts in the Milky Way galaxy, forming a population that continues to make stars after halting production as computer simulations predict. The researchers used Hubble’s extensive coverage of 36 dwarf galaxies orbiting Andromeda to build detailed 3D images and reconstruct how they made new stars over the past 13.8 billion years. They also discovered that some satellites are on parallel trajectories, suggesting a different formation process for dwarf galaxies than what scientists previously thought.
